چکیده

The Nominal Mapping Parameter (Chierchia 1998) has been proposed as a semantic parameter to account for the cross-linguistic distribution of bare nominals. We examine specific predictions that the NMP makes with respect to the bare singular arguments and bare singular predicates. Brazilian Portuguese allows bare singulars in argument position while English and other Romance languages doe not. Furthermore, English generally disallows bare singular predicates, while Brazilian Portuguse and most other Romance languages do. Neither of these patterns is predicted by the NMP. We propose instead, that the variation can be accounted for by two independently motivated morpho-syntactic parameters: one which allows Num and Agr to be split in Romance but not in English, and one which allows English and Brazilian Portuguese to have a null determiner. The combination of these two parameters allows bare singulars in argument position in Brazilian Portuguese. Our proposal eliminates the need for a semantic parameter.

Bare Nouns and the Morphosyntax Of

The syntax and semantics of bare nominal expressions has been the subject of much research over the past few years. Two fundamental distinctions are generally assumed: bare nominals are generally restricted to plural and mass terms (unless they are proper names) and the "interesting" cases of bare nominals are those that appear in argument positions. We will call the first distinction the singu...

Bare NP’s, Reference to Kinds, and Incorporation

This paper deals with differences between Hindi bare nominals in the availability of existential readings and the possibility of discourse anaphora. Is reference to kinds a mediating factor in object level quantif...

Count and Mass Nouns in Dëne S né

Dëne S né (short: Dëne), an Athapaskan language of Northern Canada, does not have any number-related grammatical categories in the nominal domain. Word order is SOV; nominals are optional (Cook 2004, Rice & Saxon 2005). The language lacks articles, case markers, etc., so that when nominal constituents occur, they are often bare nouns. (1) shows bare noun subjects, objects, and postpositional ob...

Bare Nominals: Non-specific and Contrastive Readings under Scrambling

This article explores the empirical validity of the generalization that scrambling of indefinites correlates with the loss of non-specific readings. There are two issues relevant to the generalization that have not been fully investigated in previous literature. The first is the status of contrastive readings, which do survive scrambling. If contrastive readings are non-specific, and it is argu...
